Sonoma Valley has no shortage of scenic places to raise a glass, but the stretch of Highway 12 running through Kenwood and south into Glen Ellen is something exceptional. To the east, the Mayacamas Mountains rise in a jagged line. To the west, the Sonoma Mountain Range rolls in softer folds. Between them, a handful of wineries have built outdoor spaces worthy of the backdrop; gardens, grand lawns, oak groves, water-side patios, and estate picnic grounds that make it difficult to leave.
This guide covers five of the prettiest Sonoma wineries and their outdoor spaces near Kenwood, including one just a few minutes south in Glen Ellen that belongs on every itinerary through this corridor. Each has a distinct character. All of them reward a slower pace. If you are planning a day route along Sonoma Valley wine country, this is a strong place to start.
Your Route: Kenwood to Glen Ellen Along Highway 12
All five wineries in this guide sit within a few miles of each other along or just off Highway 12 in Sonoma Valley, making this one of the most naturally navigable wine routes in the region. Because several of these are among the most visited destinations in the area, reservations are strongly recommended, particularly on weekends.
Rather than rushing through multiple stops, consider selecting two or three that match your group’s style and pace. A longer, fully present experience at each property will serve you far better than a hurried pour-and-go approach. Each of these wineries has something worth sitting still for.
1. Chateau St. Jean
For sheer architectural drama, Chateau St. Jean is difficult to rival among Kenwood wineries. The estate is anchored by a historic 1920s chateau and welcomes guests to explore winding paths through rose gardens, relax on the patio, picnic in a redwood grove, or take in views from the expansive Grand Lawn. The property is listed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a designation that reflects both its architectural merit and its place in the history of Sonoma Valley winemaking.
Chateau St. Jean has been devoted to crafting elegant, site-specific wines since 1973, and its tasting experiences match the setting. Guests can enjoy a seated tasting with sweeping vineyard views from the patio, or opt for the Estate Picnic, which begins at an on-site curated market where you select seasonal provisions from the culinary team, then settle into the property — beneath the redwoods, on the lawns, or surrounded by the chateau’s gardens. The flagship Cinq Cépages Bordeaux blend and Reserve Pinot Noir are consistent visitor favorites.
Address: 8555 Sonoma Hwy, Kenwood. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Reservations recommended. chateaustjean.com
2. Kunde Family Winery
Kunde offers two distinctly different outdoor experiences, making it one of the most versatile stops among Kenwood wineries. At the valley floor, the Kinneybrook Patio features vineyard and water fountain views, while the Mountain Top Tasting takes guests up to the summit for spectacular panoramic wine country views.
The Kunde family has been farming this land and making wine in Kenwood since 1904, originally importing grape cuttings from France’s renowned Chateau Margaux and Lafite Rothschild. Set on 1,850 acres and farmed by the same family for five generations, the estate features wine caves, outdoor waterside patios, and a deck overlooking the Sonoma Valley. Seated tasting options include locally sourced cheese, and the wine lineup spans Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, old-vine Zinfandel, and Merlot.

3. Landmark Vineyards
Nestled at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains at the corner of Highway 12 and Adobe Canyon Road, Landmark Vineyards offers a grounds-level beauty that rewards slow exploration. Tastings feature views of Sugarloaf Mountain, expansive gardens, and picnic grounds in the heart of Sonoma Valley. A pond sits at the center of the property, framed by manicured landscaping that shifts with the seasons.
Since 1974, Landmark has been dedicated to producing handcrafted, ultra-premium Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, sourcing grapes from unique vineyard sites throughout California to create rich, balanced wines. Guests can enjoy the relaxing view or play bocce ball while tasting. Seated flights pair well with artisan cheese selections, and the Mountain Range backdrop gives every pour a scenic reason to linger.
Address: 101 Adobe Canyon Rd, Kenwood. Open Thursday through Monday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. landmarkwine.com
4. Ledson Winery
Ledson’s French Normandy-style castle — with gothic spires and archways — is one of the most photographed buildings in Sonoma Valley. The gothic spires and archways pair perfectly with Sonoma Valley’s rolling hills, making it a landmark in the truest sense. But the exterior spectacle gives way to something more intimate outside. The outdoor patio sits in a serene oak grove, with shaded tables offering a picturesque and sheltered space.
Ledson’s Gourmet Marketplace provides all the provisions you need for a proper lunch, including sandwiches, olive oils, dessert sauces, and seasonal charcuterie. This makes Ledson one of the more self-contained stops on the route for visitors who prefer not to plan ahead on food. The wine list covers a broad range of varietals, all available to taste or take home.
Address: 7335 Highway 12, Kenwood. ledson.com
5. Little Vineyards Family Winery
Technically in Glen Ellen, Little Vineyards sits just a few minutes south of Kenwood along Highway 12 and belongs on any scenic patio route through this part of Sonoma Valley. The tasting room is nestled in the heart of Sonoma Valley on a family estate vineyard, with breathtaking views between the rocky slopes of the Mayacamas and the Sonoma Mountain Range. The picnic tables at the Band Blend Stage look directly over the estate vines.
What sets Little Vineyards apart from most prettiest Sonoma wineries lists is the combination of setting and character. This is a working family estate where the owners have a band, a music studio on the property, and a wall of guitars in the tasting room. The lineup is all about estate-grown red varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah, and signature blends including Band Blend and Center Stage. The winery has earned more than 50 gold medals for its reds.
The picnic table experience invites guests to relax and enjoy a Little wine while overlooking the estate vineyards. A minimum bottle purchase is required, with one bottle per two people, and hosted tastings are not available at the picnic tables. The reservation is $20 per person for a 90-minute table, and the approach is summed up in the house tagline: “You bring the picnic; we’ll bring the wine.” Children are included in the guest count. For groups larger than 12, contact the tasting room directly at [email protected].
The tasting room is open Friday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Reservations for tasting experiences are available online, and weekend slots fill quickly.

Practical Notes for Planning Your Day
- Reserve in advance. Weekend patio availability at all five wineries fills quickly. Book as early as possible, especially for seated or experiential tastings.
- Allow 60 to 90 minutes per stop. These are settings designed to be savored, not rushed.
- Arrange transportation. Several private driver and shuttle services operate throughout the Kenwood and Glen Ellen corridor. Plan for a designated driver or a pre-booked service.
- Pack layers. Sonoma Valley mornings can be cool even in summer, and afternoon valley breezes arrive quickly.
- Confirm pet and family policies before visiting. Each winery has its own rules around children, dogs, and outside food. Little Vineyards welcomes both; confirm with others directly before arrival.
- Pick two or three stops, not five. This route is best experienced at a slower pace. A full afternoon at two exceptional wineries will be more memorable than a rushed pass through all of them.
